Meeting Description

Who

You should attend this meetup if you play: banjo, guitar, mandolin, fiddle, dobro or bass. Singers welcome. This is a SLOW JAM -- meant for advanced beginning and intermediate players.

Why

If you're a fairly new player and really want to play with other people, this is the meetup for you. Most of the folks that are part of this meetup are new to jamming and it is very exciting to be playing in a group for the first time.

Organized by

"You really can't miss us. We'll be the ones playing bluegrass music! This is a great venue. Many thanks to Steve Duggan for letting us use this space!!!"
--Sue B

Details

This Meetup happens EVERY SECOND and FOURTH MONDAY OF THE MONTH

For the next meeting, think about learning some or all of these songs:

Banjo in the Hollow
Cripple Creek
Cluck Old Hen
Worried Man Blues
John Hardy
Wildwood Flower
Will the Circle Be Unbroken
Old Joe Clark
Banjo in the Hollow
This Little Light of Mine
Hot Corn Cold Corn
Cumberland Gap
Goin' down that Road Feeling Bad
Don't this Road Look Rough and Rocky
Litttle Darlin' Pal of Mind
Soldier's Joy
Long Black Veil
Angel Band

If you have other songs that you want to share, make sure they're simple. And it would be icing on the cake if you could photocopy the song with the chords and pass it out to others in the group. We started at 4 people for the first meeting, then went to six for the second meeting and then went to 22 for the fourth meeting. Lots of people have been inquiring about this meetup -- a big happy surprise to me. This is the only public slow jam in NYC!

Sorry to have missed the last two. Have a chest cold and slight fever, so it's not looking good for tomorrow, but hey, you never know1

"Great evening. It's a great no risk way to play with other people and to learn how to play with other people."

  • Stephan Klein
"Well organized and run. I liked the chord cue cards and Bill was terrific as usual in leading the jam. I am happy we are broadening our songs to include not only traditional blue grass songs. Keep up the good work. I am sure that everyone appreciates the work you are doing to organize the jams. The slow jam is a great opportunity. Great for learning and a lot of fun to participate in."

"Very good time. Looking forward to the next one."

"Had a great time as usual. Even though I don't play bluegrass music per se, I really enjoy playing with bluegrass musicians. Been hesitant to try soloing because I am not sure how it will turn out. Would it be possible for a few of us novices to meet once or twice to try out our picking prior to playing for such a large and imposing group? Some of the tunes chosen this week were a little obscure with very rapid chord changes and no words to latch on to. A few challenging melodies in the key of D in 3/4 time is fine but why not save these to the end for the better players so the rest of us are not discouraged or have those really experienced players start a 1/2 hour earlier. I have a couple of easy suggestions for the next group meeting that are usually associated with the early jazz era. they are, "Momma Don't Allow" and "When the Saints go Marching In" Simple songs even for me with lots of room room for improvisation. Next Scheduled date is Memorial Day and I'm available "

"Another great jam! Hey is there enough money in the group treasury to buy me a pointer for the chord charts? :)"
